The Vice Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University Prof Anwar Hossain has been confined to his office for a third straight day on Friday due to a gherao by a faction of the university teachers, who has been demanding his resignation.
Prof Anwar, however, has sought President Abdul Hamid’s intervention to overcome the crisis and promised to step down only if the President tells him to do so.
Meanwhile, the teachers, who have demonstrating under the banner of the Teachers Forum, have set Aug 26 as the deadline for his resignation.
Like the previous two days, the protesters were seen stationed outside the office of the VC.
After bdnews24.com Correspondent went to meet him on Friday morning, he said, “I will accept whatever the decision President takes.”
He said he had been in regular contact with the President’s office.
Prof Anwar on Wednesday sent a letter to the President seeking his intervention to resolve the crisis.
On Friday, he also questioned the logics behind the movements against him. “The Teachers Forum is illegal.”
Anwar said he was hopeful that the university students would play an ‘effective role’ during, what he said, the crisis-time of the university.
Meanwhile, Kamrul Ahsan, Secretary of the Teachers Forum held a Press Conference on Friday noon wherein he had hinted at toughening their agitations.
“We’ll force Prof Anwar to quit if he does not willingly do that by Aug 26,” he said.
Anwar was given the VC’s responsibility last year after Prof Sharif Enamul Kabir resigned from the post following demonstration by teachers and students of the university.
Some teachers, including those close to the previous VC, started demanding his resignation few months after he took charge.
