Jahangirnagar University teachers and students demanding resignation of the vice chancellor today withdrew their demonstrations following directives from the president of the country.
Members of “Sadharan Shikkhak Forum”, a platform of the agitating teachers, will return to classes from Saturday, Prof Kamrul Ahsan, member secretary of the forum, told reporters at a press briefing at the vice-chancellor’s residence.
However, VC Prof Anwar Hossain is to announce the schedule of the VC-panel election, one of the focal points of the movement, by Sunday, or the teachers would again launch an all-out non-cooperation campaign, he added.
President Abdul Hamid, who is also the chancellor of the university, issued four directives to the VC and the teachers yesterday to draw an end to the ongoing agitation.
Under the University Ordinance 1973, the president in his four-point direction asked Prof Anwar Hossain to arrange the election and called upon the agitating teachers to withdraw their movement unconditionally.
The agitating teachers had confined the VC to his residence since Sunday, asking for his immediate resignation and holding the VC panel election soon.
Earlier, Prof Hanif Ali, a leader of the movement, told our JahangirnagarUniversity correspondent that they would withdraw the confinement and agitation programme only after declaring the date of the VC panel election.
The Jahangirnagar University Teachers Association (Juta) has been carrying out an all-out non-cooperation programme since November 2, boycotting all classes and academic activities.
