Jahangirnagar University students have blocked Dhaka-Aricha highway in an agitation and demanded that a police sergeant, Imran, be dismissed for physically assaulting their teacher on Saturday night.
They blockaded the busy highway at the varsity’s Dairy Gate, causing several kilometers of tailback on both lanes across the campus, Sunday afternoon.
Their teacher of Journalism and Media Studies department, Rakib Ahmed, was assaulted by that police sergeant as he was driving his car toward Sylhet last night. He was then crossing Uttara House Building area at 10:30pm. The sergeant allegedly wanted to seize the car and attacked the teacher physically, after detecting the car on the wrong lane.
Proctor of the varsity, professor Tapan Saha urged the students to withdraw their road blockade programme as the police sergeant had already been suspended. The blockade started around 12:40pm.
The students said they will go back to their dormitories if the authorities dismiss that sergeant.
Sergeant Imran has already been closed to Dhaka Metropolitan Police control and two separate inquiry teams were made to investigate the incident. They were asked to submit the reports within three days.
