JP to contest polls to protect democracy: Ershad

He urges opposition to join too

Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Thursday said he is going to take part in the next national election for what he said protecting democracy.

“I’m participating in the polls for protecting democracy. There would have been no election mood had I not been there,” he told a party function at his Banani party office in the city.

Ershad said there would have been confrontation; killing and the power would have been grabbed by the third force. “So, I’ve decided to go to polls to stop confrontation, violence and killing.”

The former military ruler said his party cannot be affected for other party and that is why it has decided to contest the polls independently.

“I call upon the opposition to take part in the election shunning vandalism, killing people and violence in the name of hartal,” he said.

Ershad also said a government can be unseated in three ways – through vote, mass upsurge and military coup.

Earlier, he welcomed a group of college and university students who joined the JP’s student wing today.

He urged the students to take up pens instead of arms. “I had that dream for you. My dream had not been materialised. You have to come out from the tendency of involving in crimes like arms and drug abuse.”
