Journos to hold grand rally Monday demanding Mahmudur’s release

Journalists will hold a grand rally in the capital on Monday (April 22) demanding the release of Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman.

Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) will jointly organise the grand rally in front of the National Press Club.
On April 11, Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Mahmudur Rahman from his Karwanbazar office on charge of sedition. Later police raided the press of the vernacular daily on the night and sealed off it.
Ruhul Amin Gazi, president of a faction of BFUJ, announced the programme from a protest rally held in front of the press club on Thursday.
BFUJ and DUJ organised the rally demanding the release of the Amar Desh acting editor and allowing its publication.
Urging people from all walks of life to join the rally, Gazi said, “We will be compelled to announce tougher programmes like siege to the home ministry from our Monday’s rally if the government does not release Mahmudur Rahman by then.”
The BFUJ faction chief also announced that Diploma Engineers’ Association, Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh and Shikkhak Karmachari Oikya Jote will hold protest rallies in front of the press club on Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively to press home the demands.
