Joint Opposition candidate Ibrahim Solih defeats President Yameen in Maldivian election

Male, September 24 (newsin.asia): In the Maldivian Presidential election held on September 23, the Joint Opposition’s impassioned plea for the restoration of democracy secured an overwhelming response from the voters. The Joint Opposition’s candidate Ibrahim Solih, convincingly defeated the incumbent President Abdulla Yameen.

The electorate decisively rejected Abdulla Yameen’s call to vote for rapid economic development and its attendant benefits, suppressing the “foreign-inspired” craving for political, constitutional and individual rights.

As per the figures available at 1.00 am on September 25, the Joint Opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was leading comfortably, having secured 58.3% of the votes polled as against 41.1% secured by President Yameen.

209,929 votes of the total 262,135 votes polled had been counted. Polling had been high at 88.2%.
