A leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal was killed and 10 others were injured when two buses hit Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain’s motorcade on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Comilla on Tuesday around 12:00pm.
However, BNP standing committee member Mosharraf escaped unhurt in the road mishap, while the deceased was identified as Jewel Pradhan Raihan, 20, son of late Chadek Mia of Daudkandi upazila in Comilla.
Jewel was a leader of Daudkandi municipality unit of JCD and he completed his Higher Secondary Certificate examination from Hasanpur Shaheed Nazrul Government Degree College in the upazila this year, police said.
The accident took place when four cars and microbuses of the motorcade were hit by two buses of Shymoli Paribahan and Dhaka-Hajiganj Paribahan.
According to local BNP leaders, the BNP standing committee member was heading to join a marriage ceremony of the son of a local BNP leader under Daudkandi upazila with 12 private cars and microbuses carrying a number of BNP and its associate organisations’ leaders and activists.
When his motorcade reached Amirabad area of the highway, both the Dhaka-bound speeding buses hit four cars and microbuses, said witnesses.
After the accident, Jewel and other severely injured were taken to nearest Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex, where on duty doctors declared Jewel dead.
The doctors of the hospital also referred eight critically injured to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, National Institute of Neurosciences Hospital and National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation in Dhaka.
They injured were identified as Nahid, Jahid, Sabbir, Rifat, Al Amin, Delwar Hossain, Imran Hiossain and Majharul Islam.
Daudkandi police official ASM Abdur Rauf said that they could not arrest drivers of the buses as they fled away after the accident.
