Terming the present political situation tough and transitional one, President Abdul Hamid on Saturday said he would play his due role maintaining the dignity.
“Various political incidents are constantly shaking us. The general election approaches fast. Pray for me so that I can perform my duties and responsibilities bestowed upon me properly and with dignity,” he told a reception accorded to him at Kishoreganj Puratan (Old) Stadium.
Mass Reception Celebration Committee of the district organised the reception for the local lad who was elected President on April 22 following the death of President Zillur Rahman.
The President arrived in his home district at noon on a two-day visit, the first after becoming the President.
Enthusiastic people from all walks of life stood on both sides of the road to have a glimpse of the President.
Expressing gratitude to organisers for the reception, Abdul Hamid said, “I’ll be with you and work for the country as long as I’m live. Personally, I’ve no desire to get anything as your love and affection is the best gift for me.”
Hamid went on: “I won’t hesitate to tell you that I’ve never knowingly supported any injustice. I was always concerned about the people of my area and tried to work for them. You’re my last resort.”
About the demands of the local people for a university in the district and improvement of communication between the district and capital Dhaka, the President said though he has become the President during a transitional period, he would try his best so that their demands are fulfilled.
He also assured them of trying to upgrade the Gurudayal College into a public university.
The President urged the well-off section of the district to extend their helping hands for the common people, especially for those who are neglected and deprived of.
“Kishoreganj, surrounded by Haor and river, is an impoverished district. So, we all will have to cope up with the nature. Every one of the district will have to contribute from one’s respective position,” he added.
Born on January 1, 1944 at Kamalpur of Mithamoin upazila of the district, Hamid was elected MP for seven times.
Lawmakers Atiqur Rahman Atiq, Mujibul Haque Chunnu, Afzal Hossain and Rezwan Ahmed Toufiq, Zilla Parishad administrator Zillur Rahman, district Awami League acting president Syed Wahidul Islam and acting secretary M A Afzal and top leaders of other political parties of the district spoke at the function held with municipality mayor and reception committee convener Mazharul Islam Bhuiyan in the chair.
