Irregularities in voter list: BNP

The current Election Commission, ‘loyal’ to the government was responsible for this, said BNP’s Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi at a press conference on Thursday.

“There are 1.4 million fewer female voters compared to 2008. An audit by the Election Commission’s working group in January shows that 15 percent of the voters enrolled in the list were issued wrong ID numbers. A voter list with wrong IDs cannot be right,” said Rizvi.

He also flayed the comments made by Election Commissioner Zabed Ali in response to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s remark on the commission.

Khaleda at a rally in Rangpur advised the Election Commission to straighten up its spine.

“Zabed Ali’s comment and mannerism is highly distasteful. Through this he has severely disrespected the three-time Prime Minister and a top national leader.

“His comments prove that what the Leader of the Opposition had said is not only right but entirely accurate,” said the BNP leader.

Rizvi said “partial people” were appointed to update the voter list and said there were reports of multiple enrolment of voters.

A prime example of the EC ‘being spineless’ was its decision to scrap Article 91 (E) from the Representation of the People Order, he claimed.

“The move has raised doubt about the integrity of people working in the body.”

Rizvi said, “We don’t think it is possible to earn people’s trust while remaining in the shelter of those who are in power.”

Thursday’s press conference was held at the party’s Naya Paltan headquarters in the capital.
