Israel launched an attack against Iran on Saturday, and a United States attack is underway, plunging the Middle East into a renewed military confrontation and further dimming hopes for a diplomatic solution to Tehran’s nuclear dispute with the West.

The US military initiated a series of strikes against targets in Iran, two US officials told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity. The scope of the air and sea operations was not immediately clear. Iran was preparing a crushing retaliation, an Iranian official told Reuters.

A source told Reuters that Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was not in Tehran and had been transferred to a secure location.

The attack follows a 12-day air war in June between Israel and Iran and repeated U.S.-Israeli warnings that they would strike again if Iran pressed ahead with its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar and UAE leaders condemn Iranian strikes

A statement by the Saudi Foreign Ministry has confirmed that Iran targeted Riyadh and the kingdom’s eastern region, adding that the attacks were repelled.

“These attacks cannot be justified under any pretext or in any way, and they came despite the Iranian authorities knowing that the Kingdom had confirmed that it would not allow its airspace and territory to be used to target Iran,” it added.

Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has discussed the situation in the region with the president of the United Arab Emirates, according to a statement from his office.

Sheikh Tamim and the UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan condemned the targeting of Qatar, the UAE, and other Arab countries by Iranian missiles, the statement said.

“Their Highnesses affirmed the solidarity of the two countries with all brotherly Arab countries that are subjected to aggression, and the continuation of joint coordination in a way that preserves the security of the region and the dignity of its peoples,” it added.

US senator says Trump’s attack on Iran ‘illegal and unconstitutional’

US Senator Edward J Markey has called Trump’s military attack on Iran “illegal and unconstitutional”.

“It was not approved by Congress and holds dangers for all Americans. Trump’s illegal actions raise the threat of escalation into a wider regional war with grave risks for U.S. troops and civilians in the region. Trump has consistently exaggerated the imminence of Iran’s nuclear threat, even after insisting the United States ‘obliterated’ Iran’s nuclear program during his illegal Operation Midnight Hammer attack.” he said in a statement.

“Even Secretary of State Marco Rubio admitted Iran is not enriching uranium. There was time for diplomacy before this attack, and there still is,” Markey added, calling for a diplomatic solution.

“This is a crisis of Trump’s creation. Americans do not want another endless war in the Middle East. They do not want to see young men and women sent overseas for endless warfare while families at home cannot afford health care. If Trump does not stop this war now, Congress must. No more war with Iran.”

The number of people killed in Israeli attack on the girls’ elementary school in Iran’s southern city of Minab has risen to 51, with 60 others injured, according the IRNA news agency.

Mohammad Radmehr, a city official, was quoted by the agency as saying that Israel “directly attacked” the school this morning.

He said 170 students were in the facility when the strike happened, so there was a possibility that the death toll would rise again as the rescue operation was still under way.

At least two killed in attack on Iraq base

A bombing that targeted an Iraqi military base housing a pro-Iran group killed at least two people, Iraqi authorities said Saturday.

The United States and Israel have launched strikes against Iran, with US President Donald Trump vowing to “annihilate” the country’s navy and missile sites.

The Jurf al-Sakher base, also known as Jurf al-Nasr, in southern Iraq belongs to Hashed al-Shaabi or the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), a former paramilitary group now integrated into the regular army.

But the base mostly hosts the powerful pro-Iran group Kataeb Hezbollah.

A source from Kataeb Hezbollah told AFP that “there are two martyrs from Kataeb and another five wounded in the aggression on the Jurf al-Nasr base.”

The Iraqi government’s security media cell announced that “at 11:50 am (0850 GMT), the Jurf al-Nasr area… was targeted by several airstrikes, resulting in the martyrdom of two people.”

It also wounded three others.

The Hashed al-Shaabi confirmed the attack and the casualties.

A source in the Hashed al-Shaabi told AFP: “It is not clear yet if the attack was carried out by the Americans or the Israelis”.

The US-blacklisted Kataeb has several brigades that operate within the Hashed al-Shaabi. It is also part of the Iran-backed so-called “axis of resistance” and has a reputation for acting on its own.

The group warned the US on Thursday of “immense losses” were it to start a war in the region, and it urged its fighters “to prepare for a potentially long war of attrition”.

Israeli strikes hit southern Lebanon’s al-Tuffah region, Markaba: Reports

Israeli air strikes have targeted Blat and Wadi Barghouti in several strikes in southern Lebanon’s Iqlim al-Tuffah region, in the latest violation of a ceasefire reached in November 2024 between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, according to an Al Jazeera correspondent on the ground.

The Israeli military said its forces were launching attacks on Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon. This is the usual army line, but civilians and civilian infrastructure have been targeted in the ongoing near-daily Israeli attacks.

Al Jazeera’s correspondent noted that no casualties have been reported so far, with most of the raids targeting open areas amid forests and hills, and added that Israeli army aircraft continue to fly over southern Lebanon.

The Lebanese Al-Mayadeen channel confirmed that the Israeli army aircraft targeted the heights of the al-Tuffah region with a series of raids. Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV reported that Israeli “quadcopter” drones dropped explosive devices for the third time in the town of Markaba.

Months of planning with US, Israel says

An Israeli defence official said the operation had been planned for months in coordination with Washington, and that the launch date was decided weeks ago.

Explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday, Iranian media reported, and sirens sounded across Israel around 8.15 am local time in what the military said was a proactive alert to prepare the public for the possibility of an incoming missile strike.

The Israeli military announced the closure of schools and workplaces, with exceptions for essential sectors, and a ban on public airspace. Israel closed its airspace to civilian flights, and the airports authority asked the public not to go to any of the country’s airports.

The US and Iran renewed negotiations in February to try to resolve the decades-long dispute through diplomacy and avert the threat of a military confrontation that could destabilise the region.

Israel, however, insisted that any US deal with Iran must include the dismantling of Tehran’s nuclear infrastructure, not just stopping the enrichment process, and lobbied Washington to include restrictions on Iran’s missile programme in the talks.

Iran said it was prepared to discuss curbs on its nuclear programme in exchange for lifting sanctions but ruled out linking the issue to missiles.

Tehran also said it would defend itself against any attack.

It warned neighbouring countries hosting US troops that it would retaliate against American bases if Washington struck Iran.

In June, the US joined an Israeli military campaign against Iranian nuclear installations, in the most direct American military action ever against the Islamic Republic.

Tehran retaliated then by launching missiles toward the US Al Udeid air base in Qatar, the largest in the Middle East.

Western powers have warned that Iran’s ballistic missile project threatens regional stability and could deliver nuclear weapons if developed. Tehran denies seeking atomic bombs.
