Chairman of a faction of Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ) Mufti Fazlul Haque Amini died of heart diseases in the small hours of Wednesday. He was 70.
Amini died at Ibn Sina Hospital at the capital’s Dhanmondi around 12:30am, the party’s Secretary-General Abdul Latif Nezami told bdnews24.com.
“He was taken to the hospital around 9pm after he suddenly felt pain in his chest. He died there around 12:30am,” he said.
Amini, who was famous for controversial remarks, was also one of the most influential leaders of the BNP-led opposition 18-Party Alliance. He was elected as MP from Brahmanbaria’s Sarail in 2001 with ticket from BNP-led Four-Party Alliance.
In 2011, several sedation cases were filed against the Islamist leader for his controversial remarks on the Constitution. He was also harshly criticised by the High Court.
He had said that “the amended constitution should not only be thrown away but thrown into the dustbin”.
Amini’s movements were limited by police after his remarks on the constitution and programmes against the present government’s women’s development policy. His social movement was confined to the party office near Lalbagh Madrasa in the capital. He was not seen in public rallies for a long time since then.
He was the Principal of Lalbagh Jameya Qurania Madrasa. He has left behind his wife, two sons and four daughters.
The IOJ leader’s political career began in the 1980s through joining the Khelafat Movement. Then he established a separate Islamist party named Khelafat-e-Islami as the founding Chairman.
Later, several Islamist parties jointly formed the IOJ. Amini was made its founding Secretary-General and Shaykhul Hadith Allama Azizul Haque was made the Chairman. Amini became the alliance’s Chairman after Haque died.
Amini was also the chief of Islami Ain Bastobayon Committee.
