Interns at government’s medical college hospitals on Saturday began an indefinite strike in protest against suspension of four fellow colleagues of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital in Bogra.
The strike caused patients’ sufferings at all the six government medical college hospitals.
On Thursday, the health ministry put the four interns of SZRMCH on suspension for six months as on investigation the ministry found that they had beaten up a patient’s relative in the hospital on February 19.
The suspended interns include MA Al Mamun, Ashikuzzaman Asif, Kutubuddin and Nur Zahan Binte Islam Naz.
Mamun is president of Chhatra League unit at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College, Ashikuzzaman Asif is vice-president of the unit while Kutubuddin and Nur Zahan are its activists.
The health ministry order said that on expiry of their suspension period the four interns would be sent to other medical college hospitals to complete their internship.
As the interns of SZRMCH began a wildcat strike Thursday morning the interns at the government medical college hospitals in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Sylhet, Khulna and Barisal also began strike in support of their fellows Saturday.
Health secretary Sirazul Islam said the four interns were suspended for assaulting a patient’s relative.
He said that such action should not prompt strike by all the interns in the country.
He said that other doctors were deployed to keep patients treatment undisturbed.
On Saturday morning the interns of the SZRMCH announced at a protest rally that their strike would continue indefinitely until the suspension of their colleagues were withdrawn, reported New Age correspondent in Bogra. SZRMCH director brigadier general AKM Masud Ahsan said they were trying to resolve the problem.
