Informal dialogue on, says Nasim

Mentioning that an informal dialogue is on between Awami League and BNP, AL presidium member Mohammad Nasim on Monday said the opposition party is staging a drama over the issue.

“Dialogue between Syed Ashraful Islam and Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has started, though informal. But the BNP leaders are making contradictory remarks in this regard. While Hannan Shah admits it, Fakhrul Islam Alamgir shrugs it off. What’s the problem in admitting it? What type of politics is this?” he said.

Nasim said this while addressing a press briefing after a meeting of Awami League-led 14-party alliance at AL president’s political office at Dhanmondi in the city. Ganotontri Party general secretary Nurur Rahman Selim presided over the meeting.

Nasim said that the 14-party hopes there will be a peaceful solution to the ongoing crisis through dialogue.

According to media reports, Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam and BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir sat in a meeting at a Banani House on Saturday night to resolve the current political crisis, but Fakhrul denied sitting in such a meeting.

Quoting BNP standing committee member Hannan Shah, different media reported that he told a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club that Fakhrul and Ashraf had a meeting on Saturday night but unproductive one. But the army officer-turned politician backtracked from it in the afternoon saying he was misquoted.

On the same day, Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu said that there was a meeting between Syed Ashraf and Miza Fakhrul and such meetings will also be held in the future.

Nasim, also a former Home Minister, said the people of the country are eagerly waiting for the election. “Most political parties are there on the field for election. Those who will boycott the polls will get isolated from people.”

Nasim went on: “We think Khaleda Zia will get into the election train feeling realising the pulse of its leaders and activists.”

The AL leader came down hard on Fakhrul for his speech to Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leaders that vandalising only one or two vehicles is not enough to overcome the current crisis.

“With such remarks he apparently confessed to vandalizing vehicles, killing people and blasting bombs. You (BNP) called upon people to take to the streets, but you yourself don’t,” Nasim said.

About sharing seats with alliance partners in the upcoming polls, Nasim said Sheikh Hasina will take the decision in due time in consultation with the alliance partners.

Fourteen-party leaders AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Nurur Rahman Selim, Sharif Nurul Ambia and Fazla Hossain Badsha were, among others, present at the press briefing.
