Although crimes like robbery, theft, violence against women and repression on children showed a downtrend across the country in the first quarter of the current year compared to the corresponding period last year, the incidents of murder, dacoity and kidnapping marked a rise during the period this year.
Sources at the Police Headquarters said a total of 1,008 murders were recorded with different police stations across the country in between January 1 and March 31 this year while the figure was 987 in the same period last year.
According to the crime statistics, 312 killing occurred in January, 313 in February and 383 in March this year while the number was 304, 320 and 363 respectively in 2012,
On January 1, Pathikullah Pathik, 50, a member of Narsingdi Sadar upazila BNP executive committee, was fatally injured when a gang of miscreants stormed into the local BNP office and stabbed him indiscriminately. He died on the way to hospital.
On February 3, Nur Mohammad Milon, 40, president of local Bansa Bazar Banik Samity of Chatkhil upazila in Noakhali district, sustained bullet injuries near Bansa Bazar. He was rushed to Chatkhil Upazila Health Complex where doctors pronounced him dead.
On March 3, unruly Jamaat-Shibir men beat and stabbed constable Omar Faruk of Harinakundu police station in Jhenaidah leaving him dead on the spot.
A total of 162 incidents of dacioty were recorded with different police stations across the country in the first quarter of current year compared to 160 in the corresponding period last year.
On March 16 this year, a gang of bandits stormed into the flat of Dr Abul Kalam Azad on the first floor of a multistory building at 28 Bijoynagar in the capital and looted 90 tolas of gold ornaments and other valuables worth about Tk 53 lakh.
Different police stations recorded some 217 incidents of robbery from January 1 to March 31 this year while the figure was 265 in the same period in last year.
On March 20 this year, robbers looted gold ornaments, cash and other valuables worth Tk 2 lakh from a house of one Mannan Sheikh at Ratanpur village in Mujibnagar upazila of Meherpur district early in the morning.
Besides, 652 burglaries were recorded with different police stations in the aforesaid period this year. On the other hand, the number was 744 in the same period of 2012.
A total of 3971 incidents of violence against women, including 812 rapes, were recorded throughout the country in the quarter against 4705, including 827 rapes, of the last year’s same period.
Police recovered as many as 2009 incidents of theft across the country in the current year’s first quarter whereas the figure was 2182 in the same period in last year.
Some 373 incidents of repression on children were found in between January 1 and March 31 this year while the number was 430 in the same period in the previous year throughout the country.
A total of 231 incidents of kidnapping occurred in the quarter this year which was 182 in the same period in 2012.
