The police department has requested the Election Commission to hold elections to the two city corporations of the capital by 30 April.

The inspector general of police, AKM Shahidul Haque, on Monday called on the chief election commissioner, Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, and made this request.

Emerging from the meeting, the IGP told journalists that the CEC wanted to know whether the situation is favourable for the elections. The IGP replied the situation in the country is normal.

An ambience congenial to holding the polls would prevail in the capital once the election schedule is announced, and people would be more election-oriented making the situation more favourable, he assured the CEC.

It would be tough for the police to carry on election duty after April as Pakistan cricket team would visit Bangladesh after April, he added.

The IGP, responding to a query about potential threats of sabotage during the elections, said the general people would resist violence as well as the saboteurs.
