I found none who cast vote in Jan-5 polls: Dr Kamal

Observing that holding a ‘voter-less’ election is not a democracy, noted jurist Dr Kamal Hossain on Wednesday said he did not find anyone till date who cast vote in the January-5 general election.

He came up with the view while addressing a discussion, titled ‘1972 Constitution and Independence of the Judiciary’, organised by the Supreme Court unit of Democratic Lawyers’ Association (DLA) at the auditorium of the apex court.

Dr Kamal, also the president of Gano Forum, said anyone wants to be public representative must be elected through people’s votes.

The ruling party, he said, can claim that an election without vote is valid, but that is not democracy. “Democracy means public representatives will be elected through fair polls and then they’ll form the government,” Dr Kamal said.

Publishing a gazette notification by the Cabinet is not democracy in any way, he said adding that opinions from all quarters should be taken before issuing any notification.

Chaired by DLA SC unit president AKM Jaglul Haider, the discussion was addressed, among others, by DLA president Subrata Chowdhury and Abu Yahyia Dulal.
