HC orders formation of medical board for Mosharraf

The High Court on Tuesday directed the authorities concerned to form a medical board for the health check-up of detained BNP senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain.

The court also asked the Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) to form the board comprising two professors.

The HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed passed the order while hearing the petition filed by the BNP leader seeking bail on health grounds in a money-laundering case filed against him.

During the hearing, Mosharraf’s lawyer Barrister Moudud Ahmed said his client requires bail since he has remained admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of BSMMU for various diseases.

Earlier, two HC benches returned twice Mosharraf’s bail petition.

On February 6, ACC director Nasim Anwar filed the case against Khandaker Mosharraf with Ramna Police Station in the capital.

According to the first information report (FIR), Dr Mosharraf laundered nearly 8.04 lakh British pounds (equivalent to Tk 9.54 crore) to the United Kingdom when he was the Health and Family Welfare Minister during 2001-2006.

After examining the evidence and other documents, the ACC found a fixed term deposit of about 8.04 lakh British pound in a joint account (AC 108492) of Dr Khandaker Mosharraf and his wife, Bilkis Akhter Hossain, at Lloyds TSB Offshore Private Banking, Guernsey.

On February 10, the HC had granted six months’ anticipatory bail to the BNP leader in the case.

However, on February 24, the Supreme Court cancelled the High Court order.
