Hasina quits Rangpur-6 for by-polls

 

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina who was elected from two constituencies — Gopalganj-3 and Rangpur-6 — in the 10th general election has quit Rangpur-6 for by-polls.

 

The AL chief sent a letter in this regard to the Election Commission on Wednesday.

 

AL election conducting committee member ABM Reazul Kabir Kawsar placed the letter signed by the premier to the commission secretariat.

 

Sheikh Hasina will take oath as MP from Gopalganj-3.

 

In Gopalganj-3, Sheikh Hasina bagged 187,185 votes while her nearest rival Jatiya Party candidate AZ Apu Sheikh polled 2430 votes.

 

In Rangpur-6, Sheikh Hasina secured 148,599 votes while her nearest rival Jatiya Party candidate Nur Alam Miah got only 4959 votes.

 

The election results of 290 parliamentary constituencies out of 300 were published through a gazette notification on Wednesday afternoon.

 

Though the unofficial results of more two constituencies Jessore-1 and 2 was announced, the gazette notifications were not published as the commission issued show-cause notices against the two winning candidates –Sheikh Afil Uddin (Jessore-1) and Monirul Islam (Jessore-2).

 

The re-voting in 392 polling stations of eight other constituencies will be held on January 16.

 

On January 5, the election was held in 147 constituencies out of 300, while the rest 153 constituencies went uncontested.
