‘Hasina, Khaleda should change their mindset’

HK

Eminent jurist Barrister Rafique-ul-Huq on Saturday said that a change in the mindset of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia is very much needed to resolve the ongoing political impasse over formation of an election-time government. “We want to see a free, fair and impartial election. Whatever methodology is adopted for the next election, it should be acceptable to all.  The election-time government should be formed with the members of the two major parties”, he suggested.
Before this, it is necessary to bringing about change in the mentality of both leaders Hasina and Khaleda,” he said while addressing a seminar at the National Press Club on political human rights.
Barrister Huq also suggested the government to hold the election after the formation of a government comprising equal number of lawmakers from both the ruling and the opposition benches.
He emphasised the need for increasing relations between the two leaders and said all problems would be solved if their personal relations had deepened. “All problems can be solved through compromise,” he added.
“Country’s people are now more conscious. Now you should bring about changes among yourselves. We urge you to sit together,” he further said.
Prof Dr Emajuddin Ahmed also emphasised the need for a consensus among the political leaders saying that the political leaders might have different opinions but people cannot live in peace if the differences between political leaders take a violent form.
“There are two alternatives for the government. Either it will have to arrange a free and fair election or hand over power to a neutral person after completion of its tenure,” he added.
The former DU vice chancellor hoped that the arrested politicians would be bailed to protect country’s hard-earned democracy through talks.
Former lawmaker Syed Abul Hossain Babla, who presided over the function, said there is no alternative to talks to resolve the ongoing political stalemate.
HM Ibrahim Bhuiyan, chairman of Samajik Poribesh O Manobadhiker Bastobayon Sangstha presented the keynote paper. The function was also addressed, among others, by Md Ghani Miah Bablu, Mostafizur Rahman Naim, Advocate Ataur Rahman, Miah Mojammel Haque, Advocate Mohammad Mohsin and Abdullah Baghmar. Human rights activist Sujan Dey moderated the function.
