Khaleda Zia has again made it clear the opposition will not allow Sheikh Hasina to head the polls-time government, as she asked her supporters to be ready to resist any unilateral election.
The BNP Chairperson gave the call at a views exchange meeting with a group of leaders and activists of Rangpur division at her political office in Gulshan in Dhaka on Tuesday night.
“We want to tell them in clear terms that the election will not be allowed to be held under the Awami League. She must go. However loud they shout, by no means shall the election be held under them,” she said.
The opposition chief called on the government to add the non-party caretaker government to the Constitution by Oct 25.
Khaleda alleged many irregularities in the voter list and called for formulating an ‘errorless’ electoral roll.
She termed the Election Commission a lackey of the government and said there could be no fair election with the voter list in its current form.
The former Prime Minister said, “The government wants to hold the election with the present voter list. There were also two voters list during the 2008 election — one with the candidates and another with the Election Commission.”
“There were huge irregularities with the voter list provided with the candidates.”
Over 100 BNP leaders and activists of eight districts of Rangpur Division were shared views with Khaleda.
Justifying the demand for non-party caretaker government, she said, “It is (Prime Minister) Sheikh Hasina who moved for such government in 1994. The Constitution also existed at that time.”
“But she caused violence, called shutdown for 173 days and so we added the non-party caretaker government system to the Constitution.”
Posing a question to her arch political rival, she said “The Prime Minister swears to the Constitution. Justice KM Hasan was to take over as the caretaker government chief as he was then the immediate past retired chief justice.”
“Sheikh Hasina did not accept him. If so, why shall we accept her.”
Khaleda urged the government to sit in dialogue to resolve the crisis.”Otherwise, you will not get any escape route. You have looted enough. So, have your tickets booked in advance sooner rather than later.”
Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members Mahbubur Rahman, Organising Secretary Asadul Habib Dulu, among others, were present during the meeting.
