Hartal in 9 districts Sunday

BNP and the 18-party alliance will enforce separate daylong hartals in Rangpur, Kurigram, Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Dinajpur districts and four upazilas of Sylhet on Sunday on different grounds.

 

The main opposition will also enforce another 36-hour shutdown in Bogra district beginning at 6am on Sunday while half-day one in Jamalpur district and Rajshahi city.

 

Local BNP on Saturday called separate dawn-to-dusk hartals in Rangpur and Kurigram district for tomorrow, protesting the arrest of party joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

 

In Rangpur, BNP district unit convener Mozaffar Hossain announced the dawn-to-dusk shutdown at a hurriedly called press conference at the party’s Grand Hotel intersection office in the city protesting the arrest of party central leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

 

On the other hand, general secretary of Kurigram BNP Saifur Rahman Rana came up with the shutdown call at a press conference in the party’s district office.

 

Earlier in the day, plainclothes police stormed into the BNP central office at Nayapaltan and picked up Ruhul Kabir Rzvi and BNP executive committee member Belal Ahmed.

 

Later, a Dhaka court sent Rizvi to jail in a vehicle torching case and also fixed December 4 for the hearing on both the remand and the bail petitions of the opposition leader.

 

In Chittagong, local BNP will enforce a dawn-to-dusk shutdown in the district on Sunday protesting the arrest of BNP leaders, including BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s adviser Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin and BNP central organising secretary Ghulam Akbar Khandakar.

 

BNP vice-chairman Abdullah Al Noman announced the shutdown while addressing a gathering before Gayenana janaza for those killed during the 71-hour rail-road-waterway blockade of the opposition at the city’s Jamiatul Falah Mosque ground on Friday noon.

 

Police arrested Mir Mohammad Nasir Uddin from in front of Shah Amanat International Airport on Thursday night while seven BNP leaders, including Ghulam Akbar Khandakar, from Kazir Deori area on Thursday morning.  .

 

In Cox’s Bazar, the main opposition on Thursday night called a daylong hartal in the district for Sunday protesting the killing of Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal leader Abdul Halim in police beating.

 

Advocate Shamim Ara Swapna, general secretary of district unit of BNP, said police arrested Halim, organising secretary of Chakaria upazila unit of Jubo Dal, from Bringa bus stand area in the upazila on Tuesday, the first day of the blockade, and allegedly beat him severely at the police station.

 

Later, he died at a local hospital on Thursday.

 

In Dinajpur, the BNP-led 18-party combine on Friday called a daylong hartal in the district also for Sunday protesting Thursday’s attack on the alliance men.

 

Mukur Chowdhury, general secretary of district BNP, on behalf of the opposition alliance, announced the shutdown at a press briefing at the district BNP office at about 11am.

 

At least 50 people were injured as the opposition men clashed with cops and ruling party activists in the Government College intersection on Thursday noon.

 

In Sylhet, the BNP-led 18-party combine on Friday called a daylong hartal in Dakhkhin Surma, Companyganj, Jointapur and Gowainghat upazilas for Sunday protesting Thursday’s police attack on party men.

 

Matiur Rahman Dudu, vice-president of Dakhkhin Surma unit BNP, announced the shutdown in the upazila at a rally in the upazila headquarters in the afternoon.

 

Meanwhile, Dildar Hossain Selim, vice-president of district unit BNP, called the daylong hartal in Companyganj, Jointapur and Gowainghat upazilas.

 

At least 100 people, including Dakkhin Surma upazila BNP general secretary Tajrul Islam Tajul, were injured in a clash between police and opposition men at Humayun Rashid Chattar in the upazila at about 11am on Thursday.

 

In Bogra, district BNP will enforce a 36-hour hartal in the district beginning at 6am on Sunday demanding the inclusion of BNP leaders, including its senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, in the electoral roll.

 

Saiful Islam, president of district unit BNP, announced the hartal at a press briefing in the district town on Friday.

 

The hartal will end at 6 pm Monday.

 

In Rajshahi, the BNP-led 18-party alliance on Thursday called a half-day hartal in the city for Sunday protesting Wednesday’s police attack on its leaders and activists.

 

Mizanur Rahman Minu, BNP joint secretary general and also its Rajshahi city unit president, announced the shutdown at a press briefing at the BNP office in the city at noon.

 

Rajshahi City Corporation mayor and BNP central executive committee member Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul sustained bullet wounds in a clash between the opposition men and cops in the city on Wednesday morning, the second day of the 71-hour rail-road-waterway blockade enforced.

 

In Jamalpur, BNP will enforce a half-day shutdown in the district tomorrow protesting police attack on the opposition men.

 

District BNP general secretary Shah Md Wares Ali made the announcement at pre-procession rally in the district town on Saturday.

 

Local BNP leaders said general secretary of Jamalpur town unit BNP Mainuddin Babul was injured in an attack by police in the town’s ferry ghat (terminal) area on Saturday morning.

 

Meanwhile, people from all strata of life will a six-hour hartal in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet protesting the filing of a case against BNP men by municipality mayor Zakaria Ahmed Paplu.
