Grameenphone 3G to reach Ctg in weeks

Country’s leading private mobile phone operator Grameenphone will launch the 3G services for its customers of Chittagong in the first half of October.

This was disclosed at a press conference in Chittagong on Monday.

Grameenphone is planning to bring some selected areas of Chittagong city under its 3G coverage by October when some parts of Dhaka city will also come under the coverage.

“We know the importance of Chittagong as the business capital of Bangladesh and we want to introduce quality 3G services here along with Dhaka,” said Allan Bonke, Chief Marketing Officer of Grameenphone, while addressing the press conference.

He said Agrabad area of the city will be covered first in October. Other parts of the city will be brought under the 3G coverage gradually — Khulshi by mid November, Pahartali and Kotwali along with Cox’s Bazar town, beach and Saint Martin’s Island by 3rd week of December.

Remaining areas like Halishahar, CEPZ and Potenga will come under the coverage by the end of December. Some areas outside the city like Chittagong University and Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet) will also be covered by the end of December.

The company will introduce affordable 3G packages and devices to meet the demand of its different customer segments, Allan Bonke said.

Grameenphone acquired 10 MHz of 3G-spectrum in an auction arranged by BTRC recently, more than any of the participating competitors. The spectrum, which is part of the 2100 MHz-band, will enable the rollout of a nationwide 3G-network with enhanced capacity and instant mobile internet access for all customers.

Speaking on the occasion, Grameenphone’s CCAO Mahmud Hossain said: “Grameenphone is known for its high quality network and services, we are committed to providing the same for 3G.”
Head of Corporate Communications Tahmeed Azizul Huq said Grameenphone will work to uphold Telenor Group’s commitment to make internet accessible to all Asians under its coverage. Telenor Group, the largest shareholder of Grameenphone, has experience of serving millions of customers in European and Asian markets with 3G and 4G services.

Telenor experience and expertise will greatly help Grameenphone to deliver quality service to its customers.

Grameenphone is the largest telecom operator in Bangladesh with coverage all over the country and over 44 million subscribers. It is the largest listed company and highest tax payer of the country.
