Awami league President Sheikh Hasina has said she would form the government on Jan 12 at the President’s invitation.
She congratulated the voters for a 40 percent turnout in the national polls and thanked the people for coming out to vote by overcoming the obstacles created by the BNP and its allies.
“I am grateful to those who went to polling stations defying obstacles,” Hasina said at a rally at the Suhrawardy Udyan on Friday, five days after the national polls.
Hasina promised to implement the electoral pledges of the Awami League.
The Prime Minister said she had met President Md Abdul Hamid and took his consent to form the government on Sunday.
“We will form the government on Jan 12 and take oath,” she said.
Hasina, who is going to be the head of the government for the third time, said Bangladesh is progressing and will continue to do so.
She vowed to build a developed and progressive Bangladesh by 2041.
Hasina said the BNP chief Khaleda Zia did not have the ability to stop progress of Bangladesh with the help of some collaborators.
She asked Khaleda Zia to solve problems through discussions and to harm the country in the name of agitations.
She recounted the situation that prevailed after the Awami League took over in 2009 and development activities taken up by her government.
Hasina thanked the Election Commission and law enforcers for holding a peaceful election.
“Those who wanted to thwart the election wanted to tread an unconstitutional path. But the people of Bangladesh want the constitutional and democratic process to be maintained.”
She said her party had pledged to fulfil people’s fundamental rights in its election manifesto.
“We have many responsibilities; we have to make sure people live peacefully.”
She said the Awami League will fulfil its electoral manifesto this time, too, as it did during its previous tenure.
Awami League’s central leaders addressed the rally organised to mark the Homecoming Day of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
