Govt makes efforts to simplify migration process: Minister

Revealing that over 80 lakh Bangladeshi workers are engaged in 157 countries around the world, Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Engineer Khandker Mosharraf Hossain on Tuesday said the present government is making relentless efforts to make the migration process easier.

The minister was addressing a seminar titled “CEDAW and GR 26” aiming to protect the dignity of female migrants organised by Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET) at a local hotel.

Observing that the migration process for women should be expedited along their male counterparts to develop the country’s socioeconomic condition, he said the government has taken various programmes to make the migration of women safe and meaningful.

Engineer Mosharraf said, “The government achieved a lot of success in the last four years in female worker migration. The rate of female worker migration has been increased to 6.14 percent and various practical measures have been taken to resolve their problems.”

He said the female workers were sent to new countries like Hong Kong and Singapore to expand the job market abroad.

Women and Children Affairs Secretary Tarik-ul-Islam, acting secretary of Expatriates’ Welfare Ministry M Hazrat Ali and Manager of UN Women Programme Nahid M Ahmed, among others, addressed the seminar with BMET Director General Begum Samsunnahar in the chair.
