The Awami League-led government is ‘selling’ the Liberation War, while the BNP is fighting to safeguard independence and uphold democracy, BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said.
He made this claim on Monday after a BNP team led by Chairperson Khaleda Zia paid tributes at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial at Dhaka’s Mirpur.
The country feels ‘confined’, he told the press, adding, “we can come out of the situation only through a fair election”.
“We are passing through a horribly undemocratic [phase]. There is no individual freedom. Cases are being filed if we say something … Is this why three million people sacrificed their lives or 200,000 women suffered humiliation [in 1971]?”
Earlier, Khaleda Zia, along with her senior party colleagues including acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members Moudud Ahmed and Rizvi, paid their respects at the memorial at 10:20am.
