Govt against army deployment as they’re out to manipulate GCC polls: Fakhrul

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday alleged that the government is against the deployment of army in the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls as they are out to manipulate it.

“The government does not want troops-deployment in Gazipur (City Corporation Elections) since they have planned to rig the polls,” he said at a youth rally organized by Swadhinata Forum, a pro-opposition body, at the Jatiya Press Club.

The newly-formed GCC goes to polls on Saturday.

Criticizing Awami League leader Tofail Ahmed for his remarks that BNP wants army deployment in the polls to make the forces controversial, Fakhrul said: “It’s a matter of doubt why their sympathy over the army has increased so much all on a sudden.”

He added: “Those, who always criticize BNP and the army, and call BNP a party born in cantonment, are now showing sympathy to the army.”

Accusing the government of trying to influence the election, the opposition spokesperson said: “Top terrors from across the country have been assembled in Gazipur and crores of taka are being distributed among the voters there.”

To put an end to such misdeeds, Fakhrul reiterated their demand for deployment of army in the Gazipur City Corporation polls.

Issuing a note of warning, the BNP leader said: “The movement to oust the government will be launched from Gazipur if any attempt is made to rig the GCC polls.”

BNP chairperson’s adviser Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku and party lawmaker Syeda Ashifa Ashrafi Papia also addressed the rally, chaired by Swadhinata Forum president Abu Naser M Rahmatullah.
