Hundreds of Gonojagoron Mancha activists paraded through the capital today demonstrating against the Pakistan National Assembly criticism of the execution of war criminal Abdul Quader Mollah.
Activists of the mancha, which was formed on February 5 this year protesting the life-term awarded to Mollah as “not enough”, had plan to go to Pakistan High Commission in Gulshan. But law enforcers stopped them before they could reach the high commission building.
Their reaction came a day after the government deplored the resolutions adopted by the Pakistan National Assembly and Punjab Provincial Assembly expressing concern over Mollah’s capital punishment.
The foreign office also sharply reacted to a senior Pakistan minister’s calling the execution “a judicial murder”.
“Bangladesh finds such remarks completely untrue, biased and absolutely inappropriate,” reads an aide-memoire Dhaka yesterday handed over to Pakistan high commissioner after summoning him to foreign ministry.
The Gonojagoron Mancha termed it interference in the domestic affairs of Bangladesh.
Led by Imran H Sarker, around 3,000 protesters, including students and family members of the martyrs of 1971 Liberation War, brought out a procession around 3:05pm from Gulshan-2.
Soon after they brought out the procession law enforcers barred them from marching forward.
Being resisted, protesters sat down on the Gulshan- 2 intersection halting vehicular movements in the area.
Meanwhile, a group of 150 to 200 protesters managed to gather in front of the high commission building, from where police again drove them away within five minutes.
Returning from the embassy, the agitators again gathered on a road in front of the Australian High Commission and chanted slogans against Pakistan.
The protesters carried banners reading, “Joy Bangla”, “Shame Pakistan Shame” and “Pakistan must apoligise for ’71″
