The National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganization (Nicar) on Monday approved a proposal to form Gazipur City Corporation comprising Gazipur and Tongi municipalities and their adjoining areas.
The decision was taken at the 107th meeting of Nicar held at Bangladesh Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Additional Secretary of Cabinet Division Mohammad Nazrul Islam said that the approval was given under the Local Government (City Corporation) Act, 2009 and under the Local Government (City Corporation) Establishment Rules, 2010.
Replying to a query, he said the LGRD ministry will publish a gazette notification to this effect.
The total size of the Gazipur City Corporation will be 329.53 square kilometres comprising a population of 25,50,758.
The Nicar meeting also approved a proposal for upgrading Tarakanda thana in Phulpur upazila of Mymensingh into a new upazila comprising 10 unions, with a size of 315.69 square kilometres and a population of 2,92,456.
The meeting also decided to establish a municipality at Pirganj upazila sadar in Rangpur district with a population size of 50,000 and another municipality at Uzirpur upazila sadar in Barisal district with a population of 51,597 both under the Local Government (Pourashava) Act, 2009.
The day’s Nicar meeting also took the decision to set up four new thanas in Chittagong metropolis dividing eight thanas and also to create 200 new posts for operating the activities of the thanas. The new thanas will be in Chawkbazar (size 6 square km, population 2,60,000), Akbarshah (10 square km, population 4,00,000), Sadarghat (7 square km, population 2,80,000) and EPZ (6 square km, population 3,50,000).
Besides, it was also decided in the meeting to set up a new thana at Jorarganj with a size of 298 square km dividing Mirsarai thana in Chittagong creating 44 new posts. Under the new thana, there will be eight unions, one pourasava while its population will be 2,00,000.
The meeting also decided to upgrade Dasar investigation centre in Kalkini thana of Madaripur district into a full-fledged thana creating 24 posts. The size of the new thana will be 78 square km with a population 1,15,839 having five unions.
