‘Gangster’ killed in city shootout with police; cop injured

A suspected miscreant was killed and a cop injured in a shootout between a gang of armed criminals and police near Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday evening.

The identity of deceased, aged about 35, could not be known yet. The injured cop, Shafique, 34, is an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Khilkhet Police Station. He received treatment at a local hospital.

Police and witnesses said a team of Khilkhet police asked to stop a passing private car carrying four young men near the police station at about 6pm suspecting them to be robbers.

Instead of stopping the car, its driver sped the car towards the Airport knocking down ASI Shafique, leaving him slightly injured.

As the police team chased the car, the miscreants opened fire on the cops, prompting retaliation.

Finally, they stopped the car near the Airport Intersection and three of the criminals got down from it and managed to escape, leaving behind a bullet-hit man in the vehicle.

The injured man had died in the car before police reached the spot.

Contacted, inspector (investigation) of Khilkhet thana KM Ashraf Uddin confirmed the incident saying they seized the abandoned car. And the body will be sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
