Fourth phase upazila elections March 23

Tangail-8 by-polls same day

The fourth phase election in 92 upazilas of the country will be held on March 23, announced Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Thursday.

 

He came up with the schedule of the fourth phase upazila elections at the media centre of the Election Commission Secretariat.

 

The CEC also announced that the by-polls in Tangail-8 constituency will be held on March 23.

 

According to the schedules of the upazila elections and the by-polls, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers is February 23, while February 26 is the date for the scrutiny of nomination papers and March 6 is the last date for the withdrawal of candidature.

 

The parliamentary constituency fell vacant after the death of ruling Awami League MP Shawkat Momen Shahjahan. He died on January 20.

 

The 92 upazilas in 42 districts are Pirganj in Thakurgaon, Bochaganj and Phulbari in Dinajpur, Panchbibi in Joypurhat, Gabtoli in Bogra, Tanore, Bagmara and Puthia in Rajshahi, Baraigram in Natore, Chowhali in Sirajganj,

Ishwardi and Faridpur in Pabna, Narail Sadar, Daulatpur in Kushtia, Jibannagar in Chuadanga, Harinakunda in Jhenidah, Jessore sadar and Keshabpur in Jessore, Chitalmari and Mollahat in Bagerhat, Terokhada, Rupsha, Batiaghata, Dacope and Fultala in Khulna, Kalaroa in Satkhira,

Betagi in Barguna, Patuakhali Sadar, Dumki, Bauphal, Galachipa and Mirzaganj in Patuakhali, Tazumuddin, Daulatkhan and Manpura in Bhola, Agailjhara, Ujirpur and Banaripara in Barisal, Jhalakati sadar, Kathalia, Rajapur and Nalchity in Jhalakati, Bhandaria, Pirojpur sadar, Mathbaria and Zianagar in Pirojpur, Kalihati, Madhupur, Nagarpur and Bhuapur in Tangail, Sherpur sadar and Nalitabari in Sherpur, Haluaghat in Mymensingh, Madan in Netrakona, Bhairab, Itna, Katiadi, Mithamoin and Tarail in Kishoreganj, Gazaria in Munshiganj, Kaliakair in Gazipur, Shalla, Jagannathpur and Dharmapasha in Sunamganj, Sylhet sadar and Kanaighat in Sylhet, Sreemongal, Sadar and Kamalganj in Moulvibazar, Habiganj Sadar, Nabiganj, Azmiriganj and Lakhai in Habiganj,  Akhaura and Nasirnagar in Brahmanbaria, Meghna and Barua in Comilla, Sharwasti in Chandpur, Sonagazi and Fulgazi in Feni, Begumganj in Noakhali, Banshkhali, Rauzan, Fatikchhari, Rangunia, Boalkhali, Satkania and Anwara in Chittagong, Ramu and Kutubdia in Cox’s Bazar, Zurachhari in Rangamati, and Naikhanchhari in Bandarban.

 

The EC has already announced the upazila election schedules of the first three phases. The first phase polls in 97 upazilas will be held on February 19 while the second phase in 117 upazilas on February 27 and the third phase polls in 83 upazilas on March 15.

 

Besides, election in Pirganj upazila, Rangpur will be held on February 24.

 

Addressing the function, the CEC said the violation of the election code of conduct will no way be allowed.

 

Replying to a query whether the commission will respond to complaints lodged by pro-BNP candidates over the violation of polls code by AL-supported candidates, Rakibuddin said, “The candidates can place specific complaints, if any, with the returning officers concerned. And they (returning officers) will take steps following investigations.”

 

Armed forces members will be deployed in Tangail-8 by-polls like the upazila elections, he said.
