Former Jamaat-e-Islami MP from Jessore, Shakhawat Hossain, has been arrested on war crimes charges.
He allegedly led the local ‘Razakars’ during the Liberation War against Pakistan.
Hossain was detained from Dhaka’s Uttarkhan on Saturday evening, DMP Uttara division Deputy Commissioner Iqbal Hossain confirmed bdnews24.com.
Uttarkhan police OC Yunus Ali said he had been arrested after the International Crimes Tribunal issued a warrant for him.
The politician worked with several parties including HM Ershad’s Jatiya Party, BNP, LDP and PDP.
He was religious affairs secretary of the Jatiya Party.
Hossain was elected from Jessore-6 constituency on a Jamaat ticket in 1991 but joined the BNP before his tenure ended.
He lost the 1996 general election from the BNP and contested the 2001 polls as a renegade candidate but lost.
In 2006, Hossain joined Oli Ahmed’s LDP and a year later shifted to Ferdous Ahmmed Qureshi’s PDP.
Four cases were filed against him on war crimes charges in 2009. He was arrested in June that year in Keshabpur but got out on bail.
