Foreign might overshadows locals

Bangladeshi players have failed to put forward any match-winning performance in the opening two days of the sixth edition of the Bangladesh Premier League as the overseas players have grabbed all the spotlights.
In the first two days of the competition, four matches took place and in all those fixtures the foreign recruits made the match-winning contribution and won the man-of-the match awards.
On the opening day, Chittagong Vikings’ South African recruit Robbie Frylinck’s all-round heroics helped them defeat defending champions Rangpur Riders in the first match and Afghan batsman Hazratullah Zazai wreaked havoc against Rajshahi Kings to take Dhaka Dynamites to a mammoth 83-run victory in the following match.
On the second day, Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi guided his team Comilla Victorians to victory in a low-scoring encounter against Sylhet Sixers and South African batsman Rilee Rossouw’s unbeaten 76 made way for Rangpur’s hard-fought victory against Khulna Titans.
This year BPL has reverted back to playing a maximum of four overseas players in the playing XI from previous year’s five.
The rule change took place in order to give the local players more opportunity to showcase their talent and this initiative was appreciated by the local players.
‘Last time we [local players] didn’t get a lot of opportunity because five foreigners were playing in the Xl,’ Shuvagata Hom, Dhaka all-rounder, told reporters on Monday.
‘With four foreign players in the Xl, this time the locals are getting that opportunity.’
Hom made good use of the opportunity when he played a blistering unbeaten innings off 38 off 14 balls against Rajshahi Kings to give Dhaka’s innings the impedes required in the final overs to reach 189-5.
But unlike him and a handful of other players, in the early stages of the tournament the local players have failed to grab onto the opportunity.
Rangpur Riders English batsman Ravi Bopara currently tops the highest run-getter list with 84 runs in two outings while no Bangladeshi batsman features in the top five with Hom being the highest placed Bangladeshi batter on the list at number eight.
Things are a bit better in the bowling department with Bangladeshi bowlers taking up eight of the top ten places but the top-spot was occupied by Frylinck, who had claimed 4-14 against Rangpur.
Dhaka’s Rubel Hossain’s 3-7 against Rajshahi and Chittagong’s off-spinner Nayeem Hasan’s 2-10 against Sylhet were the only notable bowling performance from a local bowler in the competition while other than Hom, Junaed Siddique (33 off 30) and Tamim Iqbal (35 off 34) no other Bangladeshi batsmen has managed to play a 30-run plus innings.
BPL has just began and the local players still have plenty of opportunity to drag themselves out of this rut, but in the initial stage of the tournament, things are not looking good for the local players.
