Finally, Jahangir stays off Gazipur polls race

Jahangir-Alam

Awami League rebel candidate Jahangir Alam on Sunday announced in public that he would stay off the race in election to Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) slated for July 6.

He also promised to work for the ruling party-led 14-party alliance-backed candidate Ajmat Ullah Khan.

“If the head of the government tells anyone anything, he has to listen to this. The Prime Minister is like my mother. I’ve extended my support to our party-backed candidate following her directive,” said Jahangir with tears rolling down his cheeks.

He was addressing a press conference at the district Awami League office in the afternoon.

Jahangir, who announced to quit the race after meeting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her Sangsad Bhaban office on June 18, said as a candidate he had some plans for the development of the city. “I think the plans will be implemented if the Awami League-supported candidate Ajmat Ullah Khan wins the election.”

He also urged the city dwellers to vote for Ajmat.

District AL president AKM Mojammel Hossain, MP and Jahid Hasan Russell, MP were, among others, present at the press conference.

Earlier, around 3pm, Jahangir arrived at his Gazipur residence at Bhogra amid tight security.

A large number of supporters with his election symbol ‘pineapple’ in hands greeted him. He responded to them waving hands and entered the residence wiping out tears from his eyes.

After a while, he along with others started for the Awami League office.

However, his supporters intercepted him in front of the Central Mosque near rail gate lying down before his vehicle. Many of them were also seen crying.

Law enforcers were seen playing the role of spectators at that time.

Later, Mojammel Haque, Russell and city AL president Advocate Waj Uddin Miah took Jahangir to the party office.
