Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir on Tuesday said the Fakhruddin-led caretaker government committed massive corruption by illegally staying in power for two years.
“The previous caretaker government assuming power for three months had been there for two years to gain their own interest. It’s massive corruption…now time has come to expose their veil and graft,” he said.
The minister came up with the remarks while addressing the launching of a book, ‘Public satisfaction with current policing practice: A study on DMP’, at Nawab Nabab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban at Dhaka University.
Criminology and Criminal Justice Program of Sociology department arranged the programme.
Alamgir lamented that no one, who had grabbed power at gunpoint and played state responsibility under influence by vested quarters, had given exemplary punishment.
He observed that corruption at state level is the main obstacle to the country’s development. “We always overlook big corruption at state level and try to deal with minor graft. A corruption-free society can’t be made only by trying to resist marginal graft without stopping graft at the state level,” the Home Minister added.
Muhiuddin Khan stressed the need for carrying out an awareness campaign to combat crimes.” We must find out the reasons for what the accused person committed the crime before pushing him or her.”
He lauded the present role of the police in providing service to people and said, “The present police are not like of 40-50 years back. They’ve made a significant progress in terms of education, behavior, attitude and providing service.”
Referring to recent the killing of police inspector Mahfuzur Rahman his wife Swapna Rahman reportedly by their daughter Oishee Rahman, Alamgir said it is necessary to think deeply why the girl ‘committed such a crime’.
DU VC Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, Inspector General of Police Hasan Mahmud Khandaker and, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Benazir Ahmed, among others, spoke at the programme.
