Two persons including a former official of US Embassy have been killed in an apartment in Dhaka’s Kalabagan area.
The deceased have been identified as Xulhaz Mannan (35), a former protocol officer of US embassy, also a cousin of former Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni and his friend Tanay Majumder.
Xulhaz was active about the LGBT rights in the country and was also the editor of Roopbaan, the country’s first ever LGBT magazine.
Ramna deputy commissioner Abdul Baten said the incident took place on the second floor of a six-storey building in Kalabagan around 5pm Monday.
DC Baten said armed assailants in guise of courier company officials entered the house and killed the duo.
The security guard of the apartment Parvez, 18 said five or six youths identifying themselves as courier company officials entered the building around 5pm, saying they had brought some parcel for Xulhaz.
But I heard shouting from the house and I immediately went there, Parvez said.
Then they attacked me with knives, said Parvez, who is now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Police said Xulhaz’s mother and their house help was also present at that time.
Several local TV channels quoting the witnesses said a policeman was also injured while he tried to capture the assailants.
Police suspects militants links in the killings. However, they are yet to confirm anything regarding the assailants.
