He asks govt to arrest Rana in 24 hrs
Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Friday demanded resignation of Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir for his unguarded remarks over the Savar building crash.
In a statement, the Jatiya Praty chief, now in Vietnam to attend International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP), also demanded the arrest of building owner Sohel Ranan within 24 hours.
Ershad alleged that the responsible persons of the government have shown utter irresponsibility during the country’s crisis.
Referring to MK Alamgir’s remarks that Rana Plaza might have collapsed due to jerking of its vulnerable pillars by opposition activists, the former president said such absurd comments not only unguarded but also an ill-move to save the real culprits by hushing up the facts.
“So, I demand resignation of the isolated and irresponsible Home Ministers,” he added.
Rana Plaza, an eight-storey building, at Savar bus stand on the outskirts of the capita collapsed on Wednesday, killing at least 314 people and injuring nearly 2,000.
Mentioning that Jubo League leader Rana illegally constructed the building using his political clout, the former military ruler said all those involved in the incident must be put on trial. “Punishment of the culprits will have to be ensured after identifying them, if necessary by a judicial inquiry.”
He said the government will have to answer how Rana fled from the spot dodging the law enforcers present the there.
The Jatiya Party chief also expressed his concern over the slow rescue operation and demand that the number of rescuers be increased.
