Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged the people to vote her party to power once again for free the country fully of terrorism, militancy and corruption.
“Give (us) one more chance to serve (the country) so that we can build a Bangladesh free from Razakar, terrorism, militancy and corruption,” she told a rally at Fatikchharhi Upazila in Chittagong on Thursday.
She said 63,904 public representatives had been elected in around 5,500 polls during her government’s four and a half years in office.
“No rigging happened in any election under this government. All elections had been peaceful. The people will cast their votes freely this time (during next Parliament polls) too,” she added.
Hasina, also President of the ruling Awami League, said: “The main characteristics of the BNP and Jamaat (-e-Islami) are corruption and murder.”
“They kill people in the name of movement and torch mosques and the holy Koran. The BNP and Jamaat resort to corruption and looting after coming to power. They siphoned off people’s money.”
The Prime Minister told the rally organised by Fatikchharhi Awami League, “They (BNP and Jamaat) cannot ensure peace for the people of the country. Come under the flag of Awami League if you want peace,” she said.
Referring to the mayhem inflicted by radical group Hifazat-e Islam on May 5 in Dhaka, she said: “They always talk about protecting Islam. But they’ve set fire to mosque and torched holy Koran outside the mosque. And we work for Islam. But negative propaganda is being run against us.”
Hasina in her half-hour speech reeled off the Awami League-led government’s successes, which include self-sufficiency in food production, distribution of free textbooks among students, export of manpower at low cost and trial of war criminals.
She announced that the Roads and Highways Deparment playground, where the rally was held, would be developed to a stadium and gas would be supplied to Fatikchharhi.
Awami League’s Fatikchharhi unit President Aftab Uddin Chowdhury presided over the meeting.
Before the rally, the Prime Minister inaugurated several development projects and laid foundation stones of several others.
The projects inaugurated include 91 food storehouses, three new buildings of Chittagong Medical College Hospital, a female hostel of the medical college, expanded Chandanaish and Satkania upazila health complexes, Lohagarha Upazila Trauma Centre and Fatikchharhi Fire Service.
She also inaugurated two patrol ships and three warships of Bangladesh Navy at Chittagong.
This is the first visit of a Prime Minister to Fatikchharhi since independence.
