The Election Commission (EC) will request the President to take necessary measures for deploying army during the next general election, an election commissioner said today.
“Observing the present situation, we think that it will be necessary to deploy army along with members of regular law enforcement agencies to maintain law and order situation during the election,” said Election Commissioner Shah Nawaz.
He was talking to reporters at his office in the EC Secretariat in the capital yesterday.
Earlier, senior Awami League leader and LGRD minister Syed Ashraful Islam said that the next parliamentary elections would be held without the help of the army.
At a meeting with deputy commissioners at the Cabinet Division on July 24, he also said that since the government had held Union Parishad, municipality, upazila and city corporation polls without the help of the army so far, it is possible to hold a ‘free, fair and credible’ election without its deployment.
