Condemning the police attacks across the country on students of polytechnic institutes, leaders of the diploma engineers on Sunday urged the government to amend the 2008 gazette in line with the recommendations of the Prime Minister and inter-ministerial committee to recognise them as engineers.
The call came from a press conference, organised jointly by Bangladesh Diploma Engineering Peshajibi Chhatra -Shikkhak Sangram Parishad and Bangladesh Technical Students Association, at IDEB Bhaban in city’s Kakrail.
The diploma engineers’ leaders said the students of diploma institutes had been staging peaceful programme across the country to press home their two-point demand, but police charged batons and released tear gas shells on them.
Addressing the press conference, Bangladesh Technical Students Association convener Zakir Hossain Sagar said as per their earlier exam-boycott programme, students of about 400 polytechnic institutes were staging peaceful sit-in programme today (Sunday), but police attacked them in different parts of the country.
He alleged that a large number of students were injured in police attacks in Dhaka, Comilla, Bogra, Noakhali, Kishoreganj, Chittagong and other places, and many were detained.
Sangram Parishad member secretary Khondaker Mainur Rahman, general secretary of Bangladesh Private Polytechnics Owners’ Association Soheli Yasmin and member secretary of Bangladesh Technical Students Association M Kawsar Ahmed Rubel also spoke at the press conference.
Scores of vehicles were vandalised as students of different polytechnic institutes clashed with the law enforcers in Tejgaon and Mirpur areas of the city on Sunday morning while demonstrating for immediate change in the 2008 gazette that identifies diploma professionals as supervisors, not engineers.
Students of Tejagaon Polytechnic Institute tried to block the ‘Saat Raasta’ intersection of the city, when police charged batons to disperse them at about 10 am, police said.
A chase and counter-chase took place between the law enforcers and the students who vandalised at least five vehicles.
In Mirpur, the students of SAIC Institute of Technical also tried to block the road at Mirpur-10 intersection at about 10 am. They later moved towards Mipur Cricket Stadium where police fired several sound grenades to drive away the students from the area.
