A Dhaka Court here on Tuesday summarily dismissed a defamation suit hours after it was filed against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia over her disputed remarks on Gopalganj district.
After a brief hearing on the defamation suit, Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Nur dismissed it around 3:45 pm.
Earlier, Bangladesh Jananetri Parishad president AB Siddique filed the libel case with the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court around 10:25 am on Tuesday against opposition leader Khaleda Zia for her ‘derogatory’ remarks made on Sunday about Gopalganj, the ancestral home district of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
In the case statement, AB Siddique said Khaleda Zia walked out of her residence carrying the national flag at 2:50pm and got into her car to join the 18-party opposition’s ‘March for Democracy’ programme, but failed to come out in the face of obstruction by the security force deployed there on December 29.
She got down from the car at 3:35pm and later while talking to the reporters said, “The name of Gopalganj will be changed. Gopalganj will no longer exist,” said the case statement.
It further stated that the BNP chairperson came up with the remarks apparently venting her anger at the cops in front of the gate of her Gulshan house as she presumed them to be chosen from Gopalganj.
