Death toll rises to 4 in capital train accident

Four people have been killed and five others injured as trains ploughed into crowd in the capital’s Karwan Bazar area.

Of the deceased, two have been identified as Abdul Malek, 60, and Monowara Begum, 50.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost inspector Muzammel Haq has confirmed about the deaths to the Dhaka Tribune.

He said one pedestrian died on the spot and another succumbed to his injuries at DMCH at 10:20am.

Later at 11am, one more injured succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment, Muzammel Haq added.

Another injured, Monowara succumbed to her injuries around 4pm, he said.

The accident took place near the Karwan Bazar fish market area around 9am when Dhaka-bound Jamuna Intercity Express from Mymensingh and Chittagong-bound Karnafuli Express from Dhaka reached there at the same time, giving no chance to the crowds who were on the rail tracks to leave the place safely, Tejgaon police station Officer-in-Charge Mazharul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune.

“One died on the spot and eight others were injured,” he said, adding, “Of the injured, three are women and the rest are men.”

The identities of deceased could not be known immediately.

The injured were admitted to DMCH and five of them are in critical condition, Muzammel said.
