Death in police custody: 4 Savar cops placed on 5-day remand

 A Dhaka court on Friday placed four policemen on a five-day remand in connection with the killing of a businessman in police custody in Savar.

Judicial Magistrate Afroza Sheuly passed the order when Inspector (Investigation) Aminur Rahman of Savar Police Station produced them before her court seeking remand for them.

Real estate businessman Shamim Sarker was tortured to death by a team of the police station at Hemayetpur in Savar early Thursday.

Those remanded are sub-inspector Emdadul Haque, and constables Mofazzal, Ramjan and Yousuf of the police station.

Filing a seven-day remand prayer for the accused, Aminur told the court that the involvement of the policemen in the killing of the businessman has been primarily proved. “They should be taken on remand for the interest of investigation of the case.”

On the other hand, lawyers of the accused filed bail petitions.

After hearing, the court placed the four policemen on five days’ remand rejecting their bail petitions.

Earlier on Thursday, the policemen were suspended and arrested on charge of their involvement in the killing of Shamim.

A team of plainclothes police of Savar Police Station held Shamim and another businessman Saiful Islam from in front of Mollah CNG Pump near Hemayetpur Bus Stand area at 10 pm on Wednesday.

Later, the team took Shamim to Hemayetpur Tannery area where they demanded Tk 5 lakh to him as toll. As he failed to give the extortion money, police tortured him, leaving him dead.

Victim’s brother filed a case on Thursday in this connection.
