BNP leader Moudud Ahmed said on Saturday that the country was being pushed towards a civil war due to the “fascist” attitude and “double standards” of the ruling Awami League.
“Both the country and you (government) will be destroyed for this,” the BNP Standing Committee Member said at a discussion at the National Press Club auditorium.
“A severe symptom of fascism is evident in the present time. They’re ordering that copies some specific newspapers
(daily Amar Desh, Naya Diganta, and Sangram) be burnt, restriction on their journalists and attacks be unleashed on the opposition.”
The former Law Minister expressed apprehension that the democratic credentials and values of the country would be lost if the next general election was not held under a non-partisan caretaker government.
He said that the Awami League government should restore the election-time caretaker government to save “democractic practices” in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh National Human Rights Society organised the discussion titled ‘Responsibilities of media and public representatives to establish democracy, rule of law and human rights’.
