Cooperate with govt for overall dev, President urges all

President Abdul Hamid on Friday called upon people from all walks of life to actively cooperate with the government in a bid to ensure country’s overall development.

“Development is an ongoing process. The government’s responsibility is to ensure a development-friendly environment, including developing infrastructures. And people’s responsibility is to make it effective through active participation,” he said.

The President was addressing a reception accorded to him by Kishoreganj Zilla Samity at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.

Abdul Hamid said, “It’s not possible for the government alone to ensure overall development. For this reason, active cooperation from all is needed. The country’s development will be expedited if the government’s endeavours are connected with the efforts of individuals, social organisations and institutions.”

He went on “As a citizen of the country, all have some responsibilities towards its people. To exercise these responsibilities one should discharge his duty from one’s respective position.”

The President observed that the key to flourishing democracy is to show tolerance to different opinions, mutual respect as well as to strengthen the democratic institutions.

Having differences of opinion among political parties in a democratic country is quite natural, said the President adding, “Our responsibility is to expedite the advancement of democracy and make it more meaningful by exercising democratic rules and norms. We have to work together for the greater welfare of the country as well as state.”

“I’ve tried throughout my life to keep good terms with the politicians having political and ideological differences. I had worked relentlessly to maintain mutual respect and love. As a result, political violence didn’t take place in Kishoreganj. Rather, they all tried to stand beside one another in the transitional period of the country,” Abdul Hamid added.

Making a flashback, the President said, “Appearing before you today, many things of the past are crossing through my mind. I was born in this haor area (Kishoreganj)… I have passed by a long part of life in this haor area …. I had begun my political career taking your help. I had tried to be there with the people of the haor area in their well and woes.”

Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain, LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, Prime Minister’s adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi and State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haq Chunnu, among others, spoke at the function with Kishoreganj Zilla Samity president Muhammad Yusuf in the chair.
