Chittagong Jamaat leaders sent to jail

Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Tuesday accepted a bail petition from the leaders as well as a remand petition from police before sending the defendants to prison.

The petitions will be heard on Sunday.

Police filed the case late on Monday night, after their arrest in the afternoon from the party’s Dewanji Pukur Lane office.

“They were holding a secret meeting to plan sabotage,” Chittagong Metropolitan Police (Kotwali zone) Assistant Commissioner Shah Abdur Rauf said on Tuesday morning.

“Police also seized explosives from the party office. That’s why the case was filed under Anti-Terrorism Act against the Jamaat leaders,” he said.

Jamaat activists were present in front of the court as the arrestees were being brought in around 2:30pm.

Shamsul Islam showed the victory sign to his followers but refused to talk to reporters.

Jamaat’s Chittagong chapter called a daylong shutdown in the greater Chittagong for Wednesday in protest against the arrest.

Among those arrestees were a Chittagong University teacher and an official of Chittagong port.

During the arrest, police seized petrol, bottles, potash and some other materials from the Jamaat office.

Shamsul Islam, a former MP, is accused in six cases of sabotage and other offences, Kotwali Police Station OC Mohidduin Selim said.
