Canada renews call for dialogue

Canadian High Commissioner in Bangladesh Heather Cruden on Wednesday renewed her call to Bangladesh political parties to engage in a meaningful dialogue.

She came up with the call at a meeting with the Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon at his office at the secretariat in the city.

While talking to reporters after the meeting, the minister said that the Canadian High Commissioner underscored the need for holding dialogue with BNP for maintaining political stability in the country.

“Political stability is important to them, not the issue when the next parliamentary polls will be held,” Menon said.

“I’ve told the envoy there’s no question about the election. Had there been any question about it, BNP wouldn’t have taken part in the upazila polls. The national election would have been spontaneous had BNP taken part in it,” he added.

At the meeting, the minister said, bilateral issues, including direct air flight between Bangladesh and Canada, and development of the tourism sector came up for discussions.

The minister said Heather Cruden expressed concern over the repression on minorities after the national election.
