The government has decided to set up medical universities in two divisional headquarters, Chittagong and Rajshahi.
Monday’s regular cabinet meeting chaired by the prime minister approved, in principle, the drafts of the ‘Chittagong Medical University Act 2015’ and ‘Rajshahi Medical University Act 2015’.
The move will take the number of medical universities in the country to three.
In 1998, the then Institute of Post Graduate Medicine and Research, popularly known as the PG Hospital, was made the Banganbandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.
Cabinet Secretary Mosharraf Hussain Bhuiyan told reporters after the meeting that the medical colleges in the two divisions will come under the two universities.
There are currently 23 medical colleges in Bangladesh with five more waiting to be launched.
During the last six years, five health technology institutes, seven nursing colleges, 12 nursing training institutes and six dental colleges have been established in Bangladesh.
