A five-year-old boy was declared dead at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Tuesday night after he was found unconscious at Shyampur sluice gate in capital more than four hours after he fell into an open manhole.
The boy, Nirab, declared dead at about 9:00pm, the duty doctor at the hospital Dalia told the media.
Unconscious Nirab was rushed to the hospital immediately after he was found unconscious at about 8:20pm.
A team of at least five divers searched for Nirab, said Fire Service and Civil Defence inspector Bhajan Sarker.
The fire service official said that the rescuers were facing difficulties because of heavy current in the sewerage line.
Kadamtali police station officer-in-charge Kazi Wazed Ali said the boy fell into the drain through open manhole at about 4:00pm while playing with other kids near Jagarani Club at Shyampur in the city.
Local volunteers also joined the operation with different strategies to make the efforts a success.
The rescue operation faced difficulties due to heavy current of water in the sewerage line, said fire service deputy director Mozammel Haque.
Local lawmaker Abu Hossain Babla visited the spot and said that stern action would be taken against those responsible for the accident.
Earlier on December 27, the locals and volunteers pulled up a three-year-and-a-half boy Zihad in a cage after the fire service abandoned the operation and began to pack up declaring that they did not find anybody inside the narrow 300-feet deep well at Shajahanpur.
Zihad fell into the water-pump well, left abandoned by the railways, while playing with other boys.
