The Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the party-backed mayoral candidates Tabith Awal and Mirza Abbas boycotted the elections to Dhaka north and south city corporations.
The announcement came at a press conference at BNP central office at about 12:30pm, a few hours after the polling began.
BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed, Dhaka north city mayoral candidate Tabith and Dhaka south city mayoral candidate MIrza Abbas’ wife Afroza Abaas made the announcement at the press conference alleging massive rigging and capturing of polling stations, ousting their polling agents form or not allowing them in polling stations by ruling Awami League men.
UNB adds: BNP standing Committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed announced the decision at a press briefing at BNP central office at Nayapaltan in the city Tuesday noon halfway through the crucial city corporation elections.
‘It was not an election, it can’t be termed as an election. We have rejected the voter-less elections. It was a mockery of democracy,’ he said.
‘Through the elections the government and the Election Commission experienced a big defeat’, he added.
