BNP on Thursday submitted its annual financial statement to the Election Commission (EC) for the 2013 calendar year.

A four-member BNP delegation, led by party joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, handed over the financial report to EC acting secretary Sirazul Islam at the latter’s EC Secretariat office around 11am.

According the report, BNP earned only 76 lakh while spent Tk 2.27 crore during the period, showing a deficit of Tk 1.51 crore.

“The Tk 76 lakh showed in the statement as the party’s income came from its leaders and activists as subscriptions. Our party spent the money in its various programmes, including the arrangements of meetings and rallies,” Rizvi told reporters at the EC Secretariat.

About the additional money spent by the party during the period, the BNP leader said the extra money came from the previous calendar year’s account.

Out of 40 registered political parties, 26 submitted their audit statements to the commission within the July-31 deadline.

But major political parties, including Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party, sought further time from the commission to submit their financial statements.

Awami League sought time till September 1, while BNP till August 14 and Jatiya Party till August 30 to place their audit reports.

According to the Political Parties Registration Rules 2008, a party has to get its total transactions on a calendar year audited by a chartered accounting firm and submit a copy of the firm’s report to the commission by July 31 of the subsequent year.

As per the article 90H (1)(c) of the Representation of the People Order, the registration of a political party may be cancelled if it fails to submit the audit report in time for three consecutive years.
